Keelung’s Tzu Li Bookstore will go under renovation after the Keelung City Cultural Affairs Bureau successfully acquired funding from the Ministry of Culture. Founded in 1947 by Chen Shang-hui, the 75-year-old bookstore is Taiwan’s first postwar Chinese-language bookstore carrying publications written in traditional Chinese.
The founder became aware of Taiwan’s cultural disconnection after Japanese colonial rule ended in October 1945, which prompted him to open the country’s first Chinese-language bookstore.
As the building becomes run-down and the equipment becomes outdated, the renovation is essential to breathe new life into an unofficial heritage site.

在1945年10月日治時期結束後,陳上惠意識到於台灣只有日文書店,深感文化斷層需要有人接續,促使他決定開設了台灣第一家中文書店。
隨著書店的建築物已十分破舊,設備也已過時,這次的翻修更具重大的意義,可望為這座非官方認定的文化古蹟,注入全新的活力。
