Vietnam has discovered a new variant of the coronavirus. The country’s health minister said it was a mix of the variants first detected in India and Britain and can spread very quickly to the surrounding environment, calling it “very dangerous.”

The new variant could potentially explain the recent surge of cases in Vietnam. The country is coping with its worst outbreak yet. It was not clear whether its prevalence is known or whether it might evade the protections afforded by vaccines.

Vietnam announced new restrictions for Ho Chi Minh City and ordered a ban on all religious events nationwide.
