Afghanistan’s Taliban government recently decreed that Afghan women must cover their faces in public. Failure to do so could result in a jail sentence for the male head of the woman’s family.

The ideal face covering was the all-encompassing burqa, but it is not mandated by the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice as long as women cover themselves with a hijab.

Since it took over Afghanistan, the Taliban has imposed restrictions on women that dictate nearly every aspect of public life, including their employment, education, travel, and deportment, which has received intense criticism from Western governments.
