Almost two-thirds of Spain’s population lives in flats. Spaniards see owning property as one of the main symbols of prosperity, which makes Spain traditionally a nation of homeowners. Inefficient regulation, including very restrictive building codes, limits development, so vertical building is cheaper and more efficient because of the price of land. That’s why flats, which are more affordable, have become so popular.

Another reason is that things like living shoulder-to-shoulder and growing up surrounded by neighbors have fostered a strong sense of community. Many Spaniards love to raise children with that strong feeling of community and family closeness.
