The expectations placed on married South Korean women are burdensome. They face intense pressure to look after their husbands’ extended families. Even though life has changed a lot, the traditional idea of what marriage looks like has not, which stops many women from getting married.

Most discrimination is subtle. Many bosses believe that men’s jobs are more important than women’s because they assume men are the primary breadwinners and that women will quit their jobs and live with their husbands after getting married.

Even in families where both parties work, women spend more than three hours a day on housework and child care compared with only half an hour for men. Men spend nine hours a day at the office, against seven hours for women.

  • Subtle
  • Breadwinner
