Over the last few years, deception research has been plagued by disappointing results. Reading liars’ intentions via their body language or from their face – blushing cheeks, a nervous laugh, darting eyes – has been proven to be ineffective.

According to researcher Thomas Ormerod at the University of Sussex, a better way to detect a liar is to shift the focus away from the subtle mannerisms to the words people are actually saying, gently probing the right pressure points to make the liar’s front crumble.
